Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis and Ethiopian athlete Tigist Assefa became athletes of the year according to the World Athletics Association, reports the organization’s press service.
Duplantis set a new world record at the Diamond League final in Eugene (United States) in September, with a result of 6.23 meters.
Assefa received the award in the Highway category. She set a world record at the Berlin Marathon, covering a distance of 42 kilometers (195 meters) in 2 hours 11 minutes 53 seconds. Marathon runner Kelvin Kiptum (Kenya) was rewarded in the same category.
Additionally, two-time Olympic 1,500 meter champion Faith Kipyegon (Kenya) and six-time world short distance running champion Noah Lyles (United States) received awards in the Track category.
Olympic triple jump champion Yulimar Rojas (Venezuela) became athlete of the year in the technical events category.
