American figure skater of Russian origin Ilya Malinin was among the nominees for the International Skating Union’s (ISU) “Most Valuable Skater of the Year” award, according to the organization’s website.
Malinin won the Grand Prix final on Saturday. In the short program, the 19-year-old skater was the first in history to perform a quadruple axel; in the free skate, he jumped a quadruple loop for the first time in his career. The athlete was born in the United States into the family of Russian figure skaters Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov.
Besides Malinin, European champion Adam Xiao Him Fa (France), double world champion Sema Uno (Japan), ISU Grand Prix winner Kaori Sakamoto (Japan), world pairs champions Ryuichi Kihara/ Riku Miura (Japan), Luna Hendricks (Belgium), double medalist at the world championships, and Evan Bates/Madison Chock (United States), current ice dance world champions.
The ISU Skating Awards ceremony will take place on February 11, 2024.
