Olympic bronze medalist Sergei Fesikov told that he agrees with the policy of the state in general and the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in particular on the issue of athletes’ participation in the 2024 Games.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced last week that it would grant neutral status to Russian and Belarusian athletes who successfully qualified for the 2024 Games. Russian athletes will be able to perform in Paris without a flag, anthem and other national symbols. The IOC banned the participation of athletes associated with security forces or who had expressed support for the SVO. On December 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a hotline that the Russian Sports Ministry and the Russian Olympic Committee must analyze the IOC’s conditions before making a decision on participation in the Paris Olympics.
— The President said very appropriate words. On the one hand, all measures taken in this direction work in our favor. But on the other hand, we understand that we take a step forward and then a step back. Everyone must be aware of their share of responsibility. The current policy of the ROC is clear to me. We value what we have and want to preserve it. Now is the time to create. Even in the form of sanctions, we need to increase our own competition, show interest in children’s sports and start working for the future,” Fesikov told .
The Olympic Games in the French capital will be held from July 26 to August 11. On Sunday, Russian swimmer Evgeny Rylov announced a boycott of the tournament.
At the Russian Championships in late November, Fesikov announced his retirement.
