Ottawa fires Smith as head coach

The Senators haven’t qualified for the playoffs since 2017.

Ottawa Senators announced separation from head coach DJ Smith. The reason is obvious – unsatisfactory results.

The interim coach will be Jacques Martin, who was previously appointed to the position of senior advisor to the coaching staff on December 6. His assistants will be Daniel Alfredsson.

Smith has led the Senators since May 2019. The 46-year-old Canadian specialist, to put it mildly, did not show an outstanding result – 46.4% of points scored (in 317 matches). This is the worst record in franchise history among coaches who have led the team for at least 300 games.

We add that Ottawa has not qualified for the playoffs since 2017.

The Senators currently sit in last place in the Atlantic Division and the entire Eastern Conference. The Canadians won only 11 victories (two in overtime) in 26 games. Under Smith’s leadership, the team lost four matches in a row, the last straw for the management being a 3:6 loss to Vegas.
