Russian Artistic Gymnastics Federation intends to get sanctions lifted in 2022, Titov says

Russian Artistic Gymnastics Federation (FSGR) President Vasily Titov said the organization will do everything possible to lift the sanction as early as 2022.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has suspended the participation of Russian athletes in international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.

– We have lodged an appeal with the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) against the decision of the FIG. We are seeking to have these decisions overturned. It is difficult now to talk about the future outcome, but we will do our best to get to the truth. Of course, athletes suffer. For athletes and gymnastics, whose lifespan is extremely limited, even one year is a huge period, but we will nevertheless try to remove the problem of sanctions this year,” said Titov, as quoted by RIA Novosti Sport.

The head of the FSGR also explained why the Russian gymnast Ivan Kulyak suspended by the international federation, did not take part in the Russian Cup in Kaluga at the beginning of July.

– Unfortunately, this decision also removed Ivan from domestic competitions. If we violate this requirement of the Disciplinary Committee, the athlete himself will suffer in the first place. In addition, he could suffer very seriously, up to disqualification for life. We didn’t want to risk the athlete.

I understand that in Kaluga everyone knows him, they are proud, Vanya is from Kaluga, from Obninsk. Of course, I would like him to perform (at the Russian Cup). But the rules are the rules, they must be respected. I don’t think we should have cut all ties and deprived ourselves of the opportunity to protect the interests of both the athlete and the whole federation as a whole,” Titov added.
