Athletistic/ Others. Russian chess player Sergey Karyakin has assessed the likelihood that world chess champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway will refuse to play with Candidates Tournament winner Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia.
“Initially, I thought he would play with anyone but Jan. It’s a small pleasure: two years to prepare for an opponent, only think about him. It’s difficult, boring, uninteresting I would give 70% that he will play, and 30 – that he refuses,” Karyakin said.
Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi met before in the 2021 World Chess Crown match, then the Norwegian won. Even before the end of the Candidates Tournament, Carlsen said that in the last game he was ready to play only French chess player Alireza Firouzja, but Ian Nepomniachtchi became the winner of the tournament. If Magnus still refuses to play in the final, then Nepomniachtchi’s opponent will be China’s Ding Liren, who took second place in the Candidates Tournament.
