According to a survey by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM), 8% of Russians named figure skater Kostomarov the athlete of the year in the country.
In early 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized due to complications from pneumonia. The 46-year-old athlete began suffering from tissue necrosis and underwent several limb amputations. Kostomarov then underwent prosthetic surgery, and in December he returned to the ice on skates for the first time.
