Brazilian triathlete Luisa Baptista is in serious condition after being hit by a motorcyclist during training, reports Globo Esporte.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning in the Brazilian city of Sao Carlos (state of Sao Paulo). A 29-year-old athlete was riding her bike on a road when a motorcyclist hit her from behind. It turned out he didn’t have a driver’s license. Baptista was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
The police report mentions negligent bodily harm and the offender’s motorcycle was confiscated. The triathlete suffered multiple injuries, including damage to her right lung, fractures of several ribs, her collarbone and her right leg. The hospital said in a statement that the Brazilian woman had undergone surgery and remained in medicated sleep on a ventilator in serious condition in intensive care.
The Brazilian Olympic Committee took to social media to wish the athlete a speedy recovery.
Baptista is a 2019 Pan American Games champion in both individual and mixed relay competitions, and a participant in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
