Kostomarov: “I always wanted to leave the golden pedestal”

Olympic figure skating champion Roman Kostomarov said he never wanted to delay the decision to end his athlete’s career.

Kostomarov announced his retirement in 2006. In 2023, Kostomarov suffered multiple amputations after being hospitalized in January. The former skater underwent prosthetic surgery, and in December he appeared on the ice on skates, participating in Ilya Averbukh’s show.

“You have to leave on time, otherwise you will find yourself not on a horse, but under a horse.”

– It’s true. Everyone chooses their own path, when to stop, makes their own decision. My decision was made at 29, which is already quite old for the sport. Since I won three European Championships, two World Championships and the Olympic Games, I understood that young people were following them, who were progressing and wanted to be better than you. I realized it was time to end it.

It’s always better to come away a winner. You might feel like you can still do it. I know people who stayed, then lost, then took even more places. “I always wanted to leave the golden pedestal and get the opportunity to play professional sports, participate in shows and projects,” Kostomarov said at the VK conference.

Kostomarov, partnered with Tatyana Navka, won gold at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin in ice dancing.
