Carlsen became the 2023 world champion in rapid chess

Magnus managed to defend his championship title for the fifth time

Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen became world champion in rapid chess at the world championship, which takes place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Carlsen scored 10 points out of a possible 13. The Norwegian was 0.5 points ahead of Slovenia’s Vladimir Fedoseev and 1 point ahead of China’s Yu Yangyi.

Ukrainian Anton Korobov took the final 18th place – 8.5 points. Another Ukrainian Yuri Kuzubov (6 points) became 115th.

Carlsen defended his rapid chess title for the fifth time. Let us remember that a year ago in Kazakhstan, Magnus became the world champion in rapid speed for the fourth time.

The World Rapid Chess Championship takes place in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) from December 26 to 30. The tournament will continue with blitz competitions, which will take place on December 29 and 30. The current world champion in this discipline is also Carlsen.

Let us remind you that the 33-year-old Norwegian celebrated his victory at the World Chess Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, in August. On his way to the final, Magnus managed to defeat Ukrainian Vasily Ivanchuk in the fifth round of the tournament.
