An experienced mentor will be officially introduced on January 10

Peruvian Football Federation announced that a Uruguayan will become the new head coach of the national team Jorge Fossati. The presentation of the mentor and his coaching staff is scheduled for January 10.

Fossati’s goal is to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

The 71-year-old specialist will replace local specialist Juan Reynoso, who has led the Incas since August 2022. Before him, Argentinean Ricardo Gareca worked as head coach for eight years. Under him, the Peruvians twice became winners of the Copa America, and also played at the World Cup for the first time in 36 years.

Fossati led various clubs from Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Ecuador, Qatar, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE for 30 years. From March to December 2023 he headed the Peruvian Universitario. He also led the national teams of Qatar and Uruguay.

The coach’s track record includes championship titles in Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Peru and Qatar, victories in the Copa Sudamericana with LDU and the AFC Champions League with Al-Sadd, as well as third place in the 2004 Copa America.

After six rounds, the Red-Whites occupy the last, tenth place in the South American qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The team led by Reynoso scored only two points.

World championship selection in the CONMEBOL region will resume at the beginning of September 2024. Peru will first host Colombia before visiting Ecuador.
