Gervonta Davis converted to Islam and was given the name Abdul Wahid

Previously, the WBA champion in three weight categories rejected a 20 million offer for a fight with Haney

American boxer, WBA champion in three weight categories Gervonta Davis contacted Islam. In this regard, he received a new Muslim name – Abdul Wahid.

It is not yet known whether the boxer will continue performing under a new name or will use the old one for his fights.

Davis’s conversion to Islam is far from unique in the world of boxing. A classic example is the legendary Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay). The famous Mike Tyson also converted to the Muslim faith at one time and received the name Malik Abdul Aziz, but decided to continue boxing under his previous name.

In 2023, Davis scored two victories, defending the WBA lightweight title for the fourth and fifth time. His victims were Dominican Hector Garcia and American Ryan Garcia. A third fight was also planned, against Devin Haney, but Gervonta refused the $20 million offer.

The 29-year-old American is considered one of the strongest boxers of our time. At the end of 2023, Davis took third place in the P4P rating from BoxRec, and was also ranked eighth in the ratings according to The Ring and ESPN.
