Athletistic / Chess. Russian grandmasters Ian Nepomniachtchi and Daniil Dubov have appealed the decision of their game’s chief referee, Ivan Surov. The referee suspected the Russians of match-fixing during the 11th round match of the World Blitz Championship.
Nepomniachtchi and Dubov performed the “dance of the little horses” on the chessboard – a pattern in which the knights’ pieces can always form a full or partial attack against the king. As a result, their game ended in a draw on the 12th move. Based on his results, Surovy decided to overturn the match result and give Dubov and Nepomniachtchi zero points each, instead of the allocated 0.5 points. The two chess players did not like this very much, after which they appealed. According to the press service of the Russian Chess Federation (RFC), the final results of the day will be known once the decision has been made.
The 2023 World Men’s Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship takes place in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) from December 26 to 30.
