Athletistic / Drugin. Acting Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Matvey Bedny spoke about the chances of a boycott of Ukrainian athletes from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris (France). The official said the move could result in sanctions.
“We do not use the word boycott as such. We only say that this is our position: we do not intend to participate in competitions if athletes who support Russia and the regime of this country are allowed to participate. For us, this is a fundamental question: we will analyze what will happen next, how the IOC will react to the arguments we present to it now, to our appeals, petitions, complaints, speeches.
We fully understand that a boycott of the Olympic Games will, in principle, be a hard blow for our athletes. We understand that in this case we also take risks. The Olympic Charter provides sanctions for such acts. And it is possible that during the next Olympic Games, we will be asked to compete in neutral status. Therefore, a boycott is a rather radical measure,” Bedny was quoted as saying by the BBC.
On December 8, the IOC Executive Committee decided to admit athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus to the 2024 Summer Olympic Games with individual neutral status and subject to a number of conditions. The 2024 Games will be held in the French capital from July 26 to August 11.
