President Gornyakov called 2023 for his club “a year of struggle and victories”
The president Shakhtar Rinat Akhmetov summed up the results of 2023 for his club and shared his expectations for the coming year.
“For Shakhtar, 2023 has become a year of struggle and victories. The club and team fought not only with opponents on the football field, but also with the challenges that war poses to us. And I am grateful to everyone – coaches, players, administrative and medical staff of the team, management and employees of the club – for not giving up and overcoming difficulties together and maintaining a high European level in everything: in the game, in the results, in the organization of all processes.” .
“Thanks to this, Shakhtar won the Ukrainian championship and won the 14th title in its history. This championship is probably the most difficult and valuable for our club. But the main thing is that the team, through its play, gave bright emotions to millions of Ukrainians, because such moments of happiness are vital for each of us.”
“I am sure that 2024 will bring us new victories! And let, first of all, this be our great common victory – victory in the war and the return of peace to Ukrainian soil. I believe that we will certainly win, that Ukraine will be a free and independent, strong and prosperous country!”
“And Shakhtar, as always, will set itself the highest goals – to glorify Ukraine with its successes in the European arena, to give the fans a good game and new trophies. I know that the team will do everything possible so that Ukrainians can be proud of it.”
The Donetsk club under the leadership of Igor Jovicevich became the champions of Ukraine in 2023. Then the Croatian was replaced as team coach by Patrick van Leeuwen, but did not last long in this post.
Subsequently, Shakhtar, with a new head coach, took third place in Group H of the Champions League. Marino Pusic’s team will play in the 1/16 of the Europa League, where its opponent will be Marseille. In the Ukrainian Championship 2023/24, the Miners are in fourth place, three points behind the leaders, but with two matches in hand.
In December, Shakhtar drew with Avispa Fukuoka in a charity match in Japan. The game ended with a score of 2:2. On December 20, the orange-and-blacks went on vacation. The Ukrainian champion is scheduled to have a training camp in Turkey in January-February.
