Russia’s Honored Coach Tatyana Mishina told that she was an Olympic champion in figure skating Roman Kostomarov deserves the title of Person of the Year in Russian sports, and his story encourages everyone to be attentive to their health.

In early 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized due to complications from pneumonia. The 46-year-old former skater began suffering from tissue necrosis and underwent several limb amputations. Kostomarov then underwent prosthetic surgery, and in December he returned to the ice on skates for the first time, participating in Ilya Averbukh’s show.

— Winning in sport is the main point. In this regard, Roman has not been discouraged and continues to move forward despite what happened to him. It’s an example for everyone that in life there is always a chance and you have to use it. You cannot give up, you must gather your will into a fist. I agree with many people’s opinion that Roman deserves the title of person of the year in Russian sports.

— But can his story be a lesson to others that it is not worth risking your health and going out on the ice with a high temperature?

— From the point of view of experience and maturity, Alexey (Mishin) and I always tell the guys: “Health should be in the first place. If there are problems today, it will affect your health in the future. Roman’s example is revealing: we must take care of our health and take good care of ourselves. Of course, no one thought everything would turn out like this. But playing with a fever is not the best solution for an athlete,” Mishina told .
