Tsurenko: Satisfied with the victory. There were a lot of errors at first, but I managed to set up my game

The third racket of Ukraine had a difficult time due to weather conditions and better adaptation of her opponent, but she managed

Ukrainian tennis player Lesya Tsurenko commented on her successful debut at the tournament in Aucklandas well as the upcoming start at Australian Open 2024.

“To be honest, I’m happy with the victory. I am only dissatisfied with some aspects, for example, the start of the match. There were a lot of mistakes. But in my defense, I can say that the conditions here are a little specific – a very strong and unpredictable wind that spins the ball, so at first there were mistakes. My opponent, having played two matches in qualifying, was more adapted to these conditions and at the beginning played a little smarter than me. But I managed to adjust my game, and then everything was quite good.”

“Yes, I follow the rating updates. Last year I didn’t play many tournaments and, probably, I didn’t even have the 18 tournaments that are now necessary, so someone overtook me, probably Emma Navarro. But, since this year there are already several refusals among high-rated tennis players, I will still get into the seeding, and whether I am 29th or 32nd there does not make much difference.”

Let us remind you that yesterday, January 1, the third racket of Ukraine successfully started the season, winning in the first round of the WTA 250 tournament in Auckland (Australia) over American Sachia Vickery. The Ukrainian’s next opponent at the event will be the representative of France, Diane Parry.

In the latest edition of the WTA rankings, Tsurenko lost one position, dropping to 32nd place. However, this will not prevent her from competing in the main singles draw of the Australian Open 2024, where she is entered along with Elina Svitolina, Angelina Kalinina and Marta Kostyuk.

Let us remind you that at the end of December it became known that Karolina Muchova, a representative of the top 10 in the world ranking, would miss the Australian Open due to injury.

The Australian Open 2024 will take place from 14 to 28 January 2024. In addition to the mentioned Ukrainians, four more – Dayana Yastremskaya, Daria Snigur, Katarina Zavatskaya and debutant Yulia Starodubtseva – will start in qualifying.

Vitaly Sachko and Ilya Marchenko will perform in the men’s tournament qualifications. Kostyuk, Kalinina and the Kichenok sisters will also perform in women’s doubles. For men, Denis Molchanov will perform in the main draw of the same category.
