Athletistic/Chess. During the World Rapid Chess Championship, held from December 26 to 30, 2023 in Samarkand (Uzbekistan), Polish grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda refused to shake the hand of Russian chess player Denis Khismatullin.

This episode became known after journalist Andreas Papadopoulos published a video on his social media page. At the beginning of the game, Khismatullin wanted to shake his opponent’s hand, but Duda made it clear that he would not return the greeting.

Recall that the winner of the 2023 World Rapid Chess Championship was Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen. This victory was Carlsen’s fifth at the World Rapid Chess Championships. He had already won the tournament in 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2022.
