Markevich: Konoplyanka played well for Dnepr, I wanted to take him to Metalist

An experienced mentor speaks flatteringly about his former mentee, but is not ready to judge the football player’s current problems

Head coach Karpat Miron Markevich shared his opinion about his former ward Evgeniya Konoplyankahis performances for Dnieper and current problems.

“What about Konoplyanka? Well, I do not know. He played well for me in his time. Then everything didn’t go as expected. But there’s nothing you can do about it, that’s how it happens. I know that he helped me a lot in Dnepr, and it is his great merit that we played in the Europa League final.”

“Which club would suit him? I don’t know, it’s hard to say anything now. I haven’t seen him for a long time, so what can I say now? Here you need to take into account what shape he is in, how he is. Injuries plagued him… Well, he played well for Dnepr, and I wanted to take him away from Metalist. It didn’t work out here. Nevertheless, he left such a significant contribution to Ukrainian football. Therefore, we need to thank him for this.”

Let us remind you that today it became known about the termination of the contract between 34-year-old Konoplyanka and CFR Cluj. In six months at this club, the Ukrainian came on as a substitute four times without playing even an hour. Evgeniy did not stay long at his previous club – Polish Cracovia.

Konoplyanka played for Dnepr from 2008 to 2015 (including in the 2014/15 season under the leadership of Markevich), played a total of 207 matches, scored 43 goals, and gave 37 assists. Together with the Dnipro team, the footballer became a silver and bronze medalist in the UPL and reached the Europa League final.

72-year-old Markevich has been working as the head coach of the Lviv Carpathians since June 2023. Under his leadership, the Lviv team confidently won Group A of the First League and will spend the spring period in the Championship Group. The team has a high chance of promotion at the end of the season.
