Pistorius released on parole

The former athlete was serving a sentence for the murder of his girlfriend

Former Paralympic runner Oscar Pistoriusserving a 13-year sentence for the murder of his girlfriend, got out of prison on parole. The former athlete is already at home on a special regime under the control of the South African Correctional Service.

In November, the court granted Pistorius’ request for parole. Oscar will be under the control of the services until the official expiration of his sentence.

Let us remember that Pistorius was initially sentenced to 6 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, whom he shot through the bathroom door on February 14, 2013.

The athlete claimed that he confused the victim with the robbers, and the court eventually found him guilty of manslaughter. Moreover, the Paralympian was close to serving his sentence under house arrest. Later, the prosecutor’s office managed to get Pistorius convicted of premeditated murder.

The Supreme Court of South Africa banned Pistorius from leaving prison, but in October 2016 he was transferred to more comfortable conditions of confinement, where those convicted of non-violent crimes serve their sentences.

In November 2017, a South African court, under pressure from prosecutors, reviewed Pistorius’ sentence and decided to increase his prison term from 6 to 13 years and 5 months.

37-year-old Pistorius became the Paralympic champion 6 times. He also won silver at the 2011 World Athletics Championships in the 4×400 relay, and also participated in the 2012 Olympic Games.
