The first trophy for a Ukrainian tennis player in 2024
Ukrainian tennis player Lyudmila Kichenok together with Elena Ostapenko from Latvia became the winners of the doubles tournament WTA 500 in Australian Brisbane.
In the final, the couple met with Gret Minnen (Belgium) and Heather Watson (Great Britain). Lyudmila was able to take revenge for her sister Nadezhda, who earlier, together with Danielle Collins, lost to this duo in the quarterfinals.
In the first set, the opponents took points for a long time only on someone else’s serves; Kichenok and Ostapenko managed to stabilize the game. In the second game, the Ukrainian and Latvian made a 4:0 breakthrough from the start and brought the match to victory.
Lyudmila Kichenok became the first Ukrainian tennis player to win the trophy in 2024. For Kichenok and Ostapenko, this is the third joint title in their careers – previously the Ukrainian and Latvian won the WTA 250 tournament in Birmingham and the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati.
