The Ukrainian won the first set with character, but then the American turned out to be stronger
The first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina lost dramatically Coco Gauff in the first final of the new year – tournament WTA 250 in New Zealand Auckland.
The epic confrontation lasted more than two and a half hours. Elina managed to snatch the first set in a tiebreaker, but then the young winner of the US Open 2023 took her toll. Two victories in a row 6:3, and the first title of the year in your pocket.
19-year-old Coco (No. 3 in the world ranking) was seeded number one at the tournament and had not lost a single set before meeting with Svitolina.
Let us remind you that on the way to the final, the Ukrainian beat former world number one Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark, snatched victory from the British Emma Raducanu and confidently dealt with Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic.
Very soon, Svitolina (as well as Kalinina, Tsurenko and Kostyuk) will start in the main draw of the first major of the year – Australian Open 2024. The event will take place from January 14 to January 28, 2024.
