In 2021, Samoilov decided to play for the Polish national team. The athlete trains in Italy.

— For the Russian public, the transition to Poland is something surreal. Did anything scare you when making your decision?

— At the beginning, I was treated very well, by friendly people, there were no problems. I have been in contact with Poland since 2020, I spent a year in “quarantine”.

I’ve heard that transitions have become more difficult now. To be honest, I feel sorry and upset for the guys who can’t participate in international tournaments. They have dedicated their entire lives to this sport and can now no longer be allowed to participate.

— Some people call those who changed their citizenship traitors. What can you answer them?

– They may be partly understood, but they do not think from an athlete’s point of view. No one knows the other side – the trauma, the tears, the worries. I want to go further, compete with the best. I understand the guys leaving. “The career is very short,” Samoilov told .

The skater is the winner and prize-winner of the stages of the Russian Cup and the Junior Grand Prix.

Russian figure skaters have not participated in international competitions since February 2022, following a recommendation from the International Olympic Committee not to allow Russians and Belarusians to participate.
