After three rounds, Nepomniachtchi has two points. Chinese world champion Ding Liren and Uzbek chess player Nodirbek Abdusattorov also scored two points. They are half a point behind the leaders, the Dutchman Anish Giri and the French chess player Alireza Firouzja.

14 chess players take part in the traditional tournament in Wijk aan Zee. In the fourth round, which will take place on January 16, Nepomniachtchi, playing with white, will meet the German Alexander Donchenko.
