World figure skating champion Elizaveta Tuktamysheva in an interview with , she explained what goals she set for herself during the upcoming Russian Show Jumping Championship.
Tuktamysheva announced in October 2023 that she was taking a career break. The 27-year-old figure skater actively participated in the show, after which she returned to training to prepare for the Russian Show Jumping Championships, which will be held on January 20-21 in Moscow. The fact of his participation in the competition was confirmed by coach Alexei Mishin.
— Which jumps are you currently working on the most?
– Triple Axel, the rest – little by little.
-How about a quadruple sheepskin coat?
— I’m not actively training him now. There were too many shows and other non-sporting events. The main objective is therefore to restore the triple axel and to achieve it with dignity in the show jumping championship.
But let’s see what comes to mind. Maybe I’ll try a quad. But not soon.
— Usually, if the technique is perfected, it all depends on psychology. Why do you think you achieved the quadruple several times in training, but not in tournaments at the most decisive moment?
“I think it’s more about stability.” In recent years, my quadruple shearling coat would not have played a major role in competition. It was more important to skate cleanly, so I focused on execution. There were few tournaments where I could just try a quadruple toe loop jump without putting the main objective at stake. And without a lot of practice, it’s difficult to get stable performance from the ultra-si element. This all represents a huge amount of work.
I think a lot of fans remember that I struggled with the triple axel at first. This didn’t always work; later there were drops, under-rotations and spots. Time passed before I understood how to perform an axel: how to adjust it, at what speed and when to turn.
To get all those sensations to settle down for the perfect quad, it just takes a lot of strength and practice. It takes more time, because it is very difficult to combine training in programs with work on such a jump.
— Since the triple axel is your signature, how would you rate its performance by Sofia Muravyova this season?
— To be honest, I didn’t watch the women’s competition of the Russian Championship, so I’m not going to lie. I only know that Sonya performed the axel to her advantage,” Tuktamysheva told .
Tuktamysheva is world and European champion, winner of the Grand Prix final of the 2014/15 season.
