Russian swimmer Ilya Sibirtsev has changed his sports citizenship and will compete for Uzbekistan, University of Louisville swimming coach Arthur Albiero said during a team-hosted media day.
Sibirtsev lives and studies in the United States. In the NCAA, he plays for the University of Louisville team.
At the end of November, the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics) announced that it had refused Sibirtsev’s request to change his sporting citizenship. Currently, the 22-year-old athlete is already listed on the World Aquatics website as a swimmer for the Uzbekistan national team.
Sibirtsev is the 2019 European Junior Champion, silver and bronze medalist at the 2019 World Junior Championships.
The swimming competitions at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Doha will take place from November 11 to 18.
