Controversial Olympic swimming champion Horton announces retirement at 27

Rio 2016 Olympic champion in the 400m freestyle, Australian Mack Horton announced his retirement from his international career.

Horton, who turns 28 in April, said he will now focus on a career in advertising.

“I really wanted to participate in the Paris Olympics, but I no longer have my former thirst for competition. It was a great honor to represent Australia at the competition. “I’m grateful for my time in swimming and as far as my legacy goes, I hope my teammates think I was able to help them and the sport in some way,” Horton said in a statement cited on the Swimming Australia website.

Horton famously refused to stand on the podium alongside China’s Sun Yang, who was under investigation for doping, at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju. Later, due to his behavior, the Australian received a warning from the International Swimming Federation.
