Our athletes will compete for awards in several disciplines
On Friday, July 15, the 18th world champion in athletics starts in Eugene. The upcoming tournament will be the first world championship to be hosted by the United States and the second in North America. Sport Arena tells you everything you need to know about the biggest athletics tournament of the year.
Postponement for a year and awards in the team standings
The World Championships in Athletics was originally supposed to take place in August 2021, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. As for the venue, Eugene received this right in 2015, and without a standard competitive procedure.
About 2,000 athletes from 192 countries will take part in the tournament. Athletes from Russia and Belarus, who were suspended after a large-scale military aggression launched by Russia with the support of Belarus against Ukraine, will not take part in the World Cup.
Over the course of 10 days, awards will be drawn in 49 disciplines. Also, for the first time in history, awards will be given in the team standings, based on the calculation of points received for hitting the top 8.
What is the composition of the Ukrainian team
The Ukrainian team at the World Championships will be represented by 22 athletes – 4 men and 18 women. This is the smallest Ukrainian team in the history of our country’s participation in world championships. In total, Ukraine received 34 licenses for the 2022 World Cup, but for various reasons did not use 12 of them. For comparison, at the last world championship our country was represented by 41 athletes, and the record figure was recorded in 2013 – 58 athletes.

In what disciplines will our athletes compete?
Ukrainians will be represented in 14 disciplines. Three – for men: high jump, hammer throw and shot throw. 11 – for women: 800 meters run, 4×400 meters relay, 400 meters hurdles, 3000 meters hurdles, 20 and 35 km race walking, high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, hammer throwing.
What Ukraine can count on
Despite the truncated composition, our team can claim awards in several disciplines. First of all, these are high jumps for women, where Yaroslav Maguchy, Yulia Levchenko and Irina Gerashchenko will perform. The first – won the stages of the Diamond League with season records. Levchenko and Gerashchenko also climbed the podium in this tournament.

In the long jump and triple jump sectors, the focus is on Marina Bekh-Romanchuk, who won the Diamond League this season.
Jana Gladiychuk was second in the pole vault at the recently completed Josef Odlozil Memorial in Prague, part of the World Athletics Continental Tour.
Hammer thrower Mikhail Kokhan, who took fourth place at the Tokyo 2022 Olympics, is the author of several records: the youngest participant in the Olympic finals in the hammer throw; the youngest athlete in the history of the Olympics, who threw the hammer further than 80 meters.
Anna Ryzhikova was second in the 400m hurdles at the World Athletics Continental Tour tournament in Savona, Italy in May.
