Ancelotti: It worked out well with Casillas and Lopez. I hope the same will happen with Kepa and Lunin

Apparently, the Italian intends to continue to rotate two goalkeepers

Head coach Real Madrid Carlo Ancelotti once again commented on the goalkeeper situation in his team and the peculiarities of the choice between the Ukrainian Andrey Lunin and a Spaniard Kepoy Arrizabalaga.

“Kepa and Lunin are happy and relaxed. I talk to them all the time. That was the case with Casillas and Diego Lopez, and things were pretty good that year. I hope everything turns out the same.”

In the 2013/14 season, Ancelotti, who came to Real Madrid for the first time, successfully rotated goalkeepers Iker Casillas (24 matches) and Diego Lopez (37). At the end of the season, Blancos won the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

24-year-old Lunin played in Real’s recent cup matches against Barcelona (4:1) and Atlético Madrid (2:4). This season he played 12 matches for Blancos in all competitions, missed 11 goals and kept five clean sheets. In turn, 29-year-old Kepa played 18 matches this season, missed 18 goals and kept the goal locked on six occasions. His last match was away against Almeria (3:2).

Ancelotti himself adheres to his strategy and tries to evenly distribute playing time between goalkeepers.

According to media reports, the club offered Lunin a new contract until 2030. It was previously reported that Real intends to retain the Ukrainian as a backup to main goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The Ukrainian will have to choose whether to stay in the team or move to another club with great chances of getting a place in the team.

Lunin won seven trophies as a member of the Madrid club. Note that a number of European clubs are interested in the player’s services – Chelsea, Newcastle and Bayern.

Real are in second place in La Liga, one point behind Girona and with a game in hand.
