Bronze medalist at the European Athletics Championships Kristina Makarenko reported that she, hurdler Artem Makarenko and all-around athlete Arseny Elfimov were kicked out of the training camp in Novogorsk due to their failure to show up for morning training.
— Today we were kicked out of the training camp: me, Artem and Arseny. This season I won my 14th Russian championship, Artem spent a full season in hurdles and showed the best result of the season in Russia, and Arseny won the all-around. This is probably not enough to train peacefully at training camp, since we did not go to training at 8 a.m.
We were told that at this gathering it is expected to queue every day at 8 a.m., except on weekends. To be clear, we do not live at the Novogorsk training camp. We train, go for massage, take medicine and go home in the evening, but before that we asked several times: be sure to go to the arena only when there is a collection. They told us: “Pay a thousand rubles per person (this is a workout) and you can go,” Makarenko wrote on a social network.
According to her, coach Makarenko contacted the head coach of the Russian national team, Ruslan Mashchenko, and told him that his athletes would not attend training. The specialist suggested not putting athletes in training camps if it is impossible to do without training.
“To which we were told everything was fine – come in, we’ll figure it all out.” That’s because there’s no one to take to training camp, and if you sometimes look at who’s there, it’s easier to stay silent. So today our leaders gathered all the coaches in the arena and said we don’t deserve to be here because we don’t go to training at 8 in the morning. I’ve never seen a coach shout so much. The head coach’s words turned out to be simply meaningless. The simplest thing we can show athletes and coaches is respect, which unfortunately our leadership does not have for us,” added the 26-year-old athlete.
Makarenko clarified on his Telegram channel that due to such situations and the attitude towards athletes, the desire to train and perform decreases each time.
— I generally stay silent about fee depreciation and who sometimes attends it. That’s why Tema and I have been trying to train at home for the past year. In winter we have a good arena in Inzhenernaya. And also the Heraklion Hall, a big thank you to them for that! In summer, of course, it’s more difficult. It appears there are bigger issues that need to be addressed,” she wrote.
Makarenko suggested that in the coming years the number of athletes who decide to end their careers will become much larger.
“” turned to the press service of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) for comments.
