The defender of the Ukrainian national team returns to the Belgian championship
Genk announced the transfer of the Ukrainian defender Eduard Sobol on lease from Strasbourg until the end of the season.
The other day, this transfer was already described as almost completed – the parties only had to settle the final formalities.
The agreement provides for the option to buy out the player’s contract. The Ukrainian will wear number 22 in the Belgian team.
Edward himself is as positive as possible:
“It was a good opportunity for me to return to Belgium. You feel at home in this country. When Genk came up with the proposal, I didn’t hesitate for a second. I also remember the enthusiastic home crowd and the atmospheric matches at Tsegeka Arena. I really like the style of play and I’m looking forward to proving myself on the field.”
Previously, the Ukrainian defender played three and a half seasons in the Belgian Bruges – 124 matches in all tournaments, four goals and 14 assists.
Sable is not in the plans of Strasbourg head coach Patrick Vieira. His contract with the French club runs for another 2.5 years.
This season, Sobol played in four matches for Strasbourg, without scoring any goals. At the same time, the 28-year-old Ukrainian missed the beginning of the season due to injury, and later appeared only three times as a substitute in League 1.
Genk is in fifth place in the Belgian Pro League standings. The new Sobol team will play their next match on January 28 away against Sint-Truiden.
Our new number 22. 𝑊𝑒𝑙𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒, 𝐸𝑑𝑑𝑦! 💙
