Two Ukrainian women in the top 12 in the 20 km walk at the World Championships in Athletics

Champion suddenly became Peruvian Leon

Ukrainian women Elena Sobchuk and Anna Shevchuk finished in the top 12 in the first medal event 2022 World Championships in Athletics in American Eugene.

At a distance of 20 km race walking Sobchuk finished 11th, and Sobchuk – 12th. Sobchuk’s place is a repeat of the second best result for Ukraine at the World Championships in athletics in this discipline.

And Peruvian Kimberly Garcia Leon unexpectedly became the world champion, who bypassed the favorite from China Tseyan Shenjie. In the last kilometers, the representative of Poland, Katarzyna Zdzieblo, also overtook the Chinese woman, who eventually won silver.

In men’s race walking for 20 kilometers, there was no sensation – the title of world champion was defended by the Japanese Toshikazu Yamanishi.

Recall that on the first day of the championship, two Ukrainian athletes made their way to the finals. Andrey Protsenko reached the final of the high jump competition, Mikhail Kokhan made it to the final of the hammer throw competition.
