Michel: We were left without the dream of the semi-finals, but we continue to fight for the top of La Liga

Head coach Girona Michel commented on his team’s relegation from Mallorca in the quarterfinals Spanish Cup.

“The defeat shows that we are a team that can lose. There are very few teams that drop so few points, which means we are doing the hard work. My players left their lives on the field, trying to make a comeback until the last moment. We have to recognize how good they are.”

“We were left without the dream of the semi-finals, but we will have to accept it, rise up and continue to fight to be at the top of La Liga.”

“I told the players we needed balance and that’s why we were looking to play two forwards to try and score and salvage the draw. We were able to turn the situation around, but I lacked the ability to beat the opponent.”

“Mallorca’s victory is well-deserved,” Michel emphasized.

Let us remind you that yesterday, January 24, Girona lost to Mallorca (2:3) on the road and ended their participation in the Spanish Cup. Michel’s team failed the first half, conceding three unanswered goals.

For the second half, the coach released Ukrainian forward Artem Dovbik (his compatriot Viktor Tsygankov was in the starting lineup and played for an hour). Girona gained a numerical advantage and was able to win back two goals, and in the second case Dovbik scored an assist. But the guests did not have enough time for a full comeback.

Michel’s team will play their next match within Examples on January 28 – away against Celta Vigo. Let us remind you that Girona leads the championship, one point ahead of Real Madrid. At the same time, Madrid has a game in hand.
