Silver medalist of the Russian Championship Sofia Muravyova recounted how, early in her career, she feared she wouldn’t be accepted into figure skating because she was too young.
This season, Muravyova won gold and bronze at the Russian Grand Prix stages.
— There are no skaters in your family. Why did you choose this sport?
“My mother and I constantly walked past the Yantar ice rink, which was under construction at the time. We saw in an advertisement that they were recruiting children for figure skating from 3 years old. Mom asks me: “Do you want to skate?” I say, “Yes, I do.” » After a while, I arrived at the screening with little skates in my backpack.
There they asked the children if they wanted to study. I wasn’t three years old then. The “interview” was conducted by Elena Anatolyevna herself [Чайковская]. And we were afraid that they wouldn’t accept me because of my age. I remember the boy being asked how old he was and he said, “Two or something.” And they take him because “we need boys.” And I’m a girl! Usually we approach and ask:
-Would you like to take us?
– How old are you?
“There aren’t three yet,” Mom said.
– Do you want to ride? – asks Tchaikovsky.
– Yes! I really want it,” Muravyova said, as quoted by Sport24.
