The Anderlecht-Genk match in the Belgian championship will be replayed entirely due to a VAR error

The referees mistakenly canceled the visitors’ goal scored after a missed penalty

Match Anderlecht — Genk in the 19th round Jupile Leagues will be replayed in its entirety due to a VAR error.

In the first half, with the score 0:0, the guests were entitled to a penalty kick. Brussels goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel parried the shot, but Genk forward Jira Sor was the first to arrive in time to finish, and he finished the ball into the goal. However, the referee canceled the goal – the VAR team recorded that the Genk players ran into the penalty area before the kick. In the end, Anderlecht won with a score of 2:1.

After the match, an analysis of the episode showed that before the penalty kick, Anderlecht players also ran into the penalty area. Thus, in the event of a mutual violation, the penalty kick should have been overturned. The Belgian refereeing panel initially considered this to be a VAR error and left the match result unchanged.

Genk appealed the decision, insisting that the referees misinterpreted football rules and did not simply review the controversial episode. The Disciplinary Council accepted these arguments and decided to replay the entire match. The date for the re-match will be set later.

Anderlecht is second in the Jupil League. Genk is in fifth place. After the result of the 19th round match was canceled, there was a difference of 5 points between the two teams.
