The French won their fourth European Championship final in four
European Handball Championship 2024held in Germany, ended in victory France above Denmark in the final match – 33:31.
The final match, hosted by Cologne, was an even contest. In the first half, the opponents took turns taking the lead, but it all ended in a draw – 14:14.
After the break, the Danes took the initiative. They led for a long time with a slight advantage (1-2 goals), but towards the end of regular time the French managed to level the situation.
As a result, the game went into overtime, where Guillaume Gilles’ team managed to tip the scales in their favor.
The most productive player in the winning team was Ludovic Fabregas (8 goals). As part of the Danish team, Mikkel Hansen made one more accurate shot. 8 goals scored by Matthias Gidsel, who eventually became the tournament’s top scorer.
France won the fourth European Championship, only Sweden has more victories (5), which took third place in the current tournament, beating the hosts in the “consolation final.” It is noteworthy that the French have never lost in the finals.
Denmark, in turn, lost their second European Championship final out of four. The previous defeat, in 2014 at the home championship, the Scandinavians also suffered from France.
Let us remind you that at the 2024 European Championship a historical record was set: the Germany-Switzerland match became the most attended in the history of handball, with 53,586 spectators.
