“The sanction imposed by the CAS in the Valieva case exceeds the measures proposed by RUSADA within the framework of the appeal” – RUSADA Press Service

Sanction handed down by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the case of a Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva exceeds the measures proposed by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA ) as part of the appeal, the organization’s press service told .

On Monday, the CAS announced that Valieva had been found guilty of violating anti-doping rules and had been suspended for four years, effective December 25, 2021. The athlete is expected to be stripped of all medals from that date, including gold at the 2022 Olympic Games in the team tournament and at the 2022 European Championships. The CAS decision can be appealed to the Swiss Federal Court within 30 days.

— The sanction imposed by the CAS in the Valieva case exceeds the measures proposed by RUSADA in the appeal. Due to the parties’ right to confidentiality of the full CAS decision, RUSADA cannot currently make further comments on this case, the organization’s press service told .

The CAS statement states that an arbitration award is subject to confidentiality review, meaning that the parties may request that the award or certain information contained therein remain confidential.

Valieva at the Beijing Olympics helped the Russian team win gold in the team competition. Before the personal tournament, it became known that the banned drug trimetazidine was found during the doping test of the figure skater of the Russian championship. The CAS allowed the Russian to participate in the individual competitions at the Games, where she finished fourth. The award ceremony for the winners of the team tournament has not yet taken place.

In January 2023, the RUSADA Anti-Doping Disciplinary Committee (DAC) found that although Valieva committed an anti-doping rule violation, she bore “no fault or negligence.” The athlete avoided sanctions, except for the cancellation of his results on the date of sample collection – December 25, 2021. Subsequently, RUSADA, the International Skating Union (ISU) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) filed appeals to CAS, which were consolidated into one proceeding.
