Kandelaki after the decision regarding Valieva: “You don’t need to think that we will ‘eat up’ the harassment. I will support if the Russians do not want to participate in the Olympic Games”

Deputy General Director of Gazprom-Media Holding Tina Kandelaki said Russian athletes may lose their desire to participate in the Olympic Games after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision in the figure skater’s case Kamila Valieva .

On Monday, the CAS decided to find Valieva guilty of violating anti-doping rules and disqualify her for 4 years from the date of collection of the doping sample – December 25, 2021. The athlete should be stripped of all rights medals from this date, including gold at the 2022 Olympic Games in the team tournament and at the 2022 European Championships. The CAS decision can be appealed to the Swiss Federal Court within 30 days.

“All the time we were preparing for these Olympic Games, we observed a form of mockery towards our athletes. We will let you in or we will not let you in, we will let you in if you have time, we will let you in if you pass the test, and so on.

I can’t imagine how stressed our Olympians were. I will not hide the fact that sport has long been a policy. Vile and low. In memory of Norwegian asthmatic skiers. But this, of course, is different.

There is no need to think that we do not see anything and will “eat” such intimidation. I will absolutely support him if our guys no longer want to participate in the Olympic Games,” Kandelaki wrote on the Telegram channel.

At the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Valieva helped the Russian team win gold in the team competition, while the American team came in second. Before the personal tournament, it became known that trimetazidine, a banned drug, was found during Valieva’s doping test from the Russian Championship. The CAS admitted the Russian to the individual competitions of the Games, where she took fourth place. There was no awards ceremony for the team tournament.

In January 2023, the anti-doping disciplinary committee of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (DAK RUSADA) ruled that although Valieva committed an anti-doping rule violation, she bore “no fault or negligence”. The athlete avoided sanctions, except for the cancellation of his results on the date of sample collection – December 25, 2021. Subsequently, RUSADA, the International Skating Union (ISU) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) filed appeals to CAS, which were consolidated into one proceeding.
