The ban of a figure skater caught doping led to the deprivation of the ROC champion award in the team competition
Team OKR (Russian Olympic Committee) officially stripped of her gold medal Olympic Games 2022 of the year in figure skating in the team competition.
This was reported by International Skating Union (ISU). The decision was a direct consequence of the disqualification of Kamila Valieva.
Let us remind you that the mentioned figure skater passed a positive doping test for the banned substance trimetazidine when she competed at the Russian Championship. The result was noticed by a laboratory in Sweden on February 8th.
Despite the positive test, CAS allowed 15-year-old Valieva to compete at the Beijing Olympics in February 2022. With her participation, the Russian Olympic Committee team won gold medals in the team competition in figure skating.
CAS has annulled all of Valieva’s results since December 21, 2021. Since December 25 of the same year, a four-year suspension of the athlete from any official competition has been in effect.
Based on the above, the ISU canceled Valieva’s results in the team competition in figure skating, namely her performance in the short and free programs. Accordingly, the ROC team slipped from first place to third, and the US team was recognized as the 2022 Olympic champion in this discipline.
In the spring of 2022, the International Skating Union expressed support for Ukraine, which was facing a full-scale Russian invasion. At the same time, the ISU took away from Russia the right to host the Grand Prix of figure skating in the 2022/23 season. Also, of course, Russian (and at the same time Belarusian) figure skaters are prohibited from competing in international tournaments.
