Captain of the Ukrainian national tennis team Tereshchuk: We are not favorites, but we will give the fight to the USA

Captain Ukrainian national tennis team Orest Tereshchuk commented on the upcoming qualifying playoff match Davis Cup 2024 with Team USA.

“Everyone is getting ready, some have problems with microtraumas. I hope that on February 1st everyone will be 100% ready. We will give battle to the Americans. I know for sure that my players will be very motivated and eager to take part in these matches.”

“Team USA players are the players we watch on TV, to put it mildly, we are not favorites. But in the matches against Colombia we were also not considered favorites, but we were able to win. We don’t think too far, we will try to win every draw. Let’s see what comes of it.”

“There’s definitely no need to further customize the players. Firstly, this is the Davis Cup, this is a game for Ukraine. Secondly, the level of opponents is high. Thirdly, we know that all tickets have been sold. An hour immediately passes for the children. There are a lot of children with whom both teams play. So the atmosphere will be very cool. It’s a pity that we play outside the house. Let’s hope that the next match will be in Ukraine, after the victory.”

“I think Americans have issues with acclimatization. They were in Australia longer than Vitaly Sachko, who was also there. However, Americans are used to this; they know how to get out of jet lag. I don’t think we should hope that they won’t be in good condition.”

“I hope that our guys will be able to show their best, despite the level of their opponents. I hope there will be matches that will be fun to watch. As for the results, we never plan to win here and lose there. There is a certain strategy, but as practice shows, anything can happen in the Davis Cup.”

Earlier, the application of the Ukrainian national team for the match with the US team became known. The national team included the strongest Ukrainian tennis player Vitaly Sachko (No. 169 in the ATP ranking), who did not participate in the previous confrontation with the Colombian national team. As before, Ilya Marchenko is not on the Ukrainian team.

Let us remind you that in September Ukraine defeated Colombia (3:2) in the First World Group of the Davis Cup and received the right to play in the qualifications of the final tournament in 2024. According to the results of the draw, our national team faced a top-level opponent – the 32-time Davis Cup winner, the US team.

The matches, according to an agreement with the Lithuanian Tennis Union, will take place on February 1 and 2, 2024 on the hard courts of the SEB Arena in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius.
