Russian junior figure skating champion Katharina Gerboldt spoke about the decision of the International Skating Union (ISU) to deprive the Russian team of gold medals at the team tournament of the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing due to disqualification Kamila Valieva and noted that the incident was not the skaters’ fault.
On Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Kamila Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. The disqualification period begins on December 25, 2021. The ISU later announced that all of the athlete’s results from the date of sample collection had been canceled. This also led to a review of the results of the 2022 Olympics team tournament, where the Russian team won. First place is now awarded to the American team, the Japanese are second and the Russians will receive bronze.
– A very strange situation. Of course, if points had been added to other athletes, we would have ended up with no medals at all – on the one hand, you would think they pitied us. Even though our guys fought honestly, the team is not exactly responsible for this situation,” Gerboldt told Gazeta.Ru.
Besides Valieva, the Russian team participating in the team figure skating tournament included Alexander Gallyamov/Anastasia Mishina, Nikita Katsalapov/Victoria Sinitsina and Mark Kondratyuk.
