Skier Stepanova said she saw no logic in Valieva’s disqualification for four years

Olympic cross-country ski champion Veronica Stepanova in her column on , she noted that she did not see logic in the four-year disqualification of figure skater Kamila Valieva for the cardioprotector trimetazidine, while some athletes are given the same time frame for a blood transfusion.

On Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. The disqualification period begins on December 25, 2021. The ISU later announced that all of the athlete’s results from the date of sample collection had been canceled. This also led to a review of the results of the 2022 Olympics team tournament, where the Russian team won. First place is now awarded to the American team, the Japanese are second and the Russians will receive bronze.

“I think it’s time to ask the question: who decided that this was possible, but that it was no longer possible? And who and on what basis decides that for this violation – six months of suspension, but for that one – four years?

I see the logic in the fact that Austrian skiers are given a four-year blood transfusion ban, “blood doping” – it’s pretty obvious: the guys wanted to improve their results and perfectly understood what they were doing. You can’t accidentally insert an IV with almost a liter of blood. But when the same four years are given to the minor Valieva for a cardioprotector, which does not affect the result in figure skating, I do not see the logic.

And this makes me doubt the impartiality of WADA and the associated International Olympic Committee,” Stepanova wrote in her column on .

Before the personal tournament at the Beijing Olympics, it became known that the banned drug trimetazidine was found during Valieva’s doping test conducted at the Russian Championship. The CAS allowed the Russian to participate in the individual competitions at the Games, where she finished fourth, but this result was also annulled. The athlete also lost the title of European champion, the title went to Anna Shcherbakova.
