In a statement posted on his social media, Tutberidze questioned the qualifications of the lawyers who defended Valieva at CAS. Previously, the CAS disqualified the skater for four years for violating anti-doping rules. The court noted that Valieva failed to provide convincing evidence demonstrating that the violation was unintentional.
Vasiliev noted that it is difficult to comment on the situation around Tutberidze, but he expressed surprise at his possible ignorance of the details of Valieva’s defense before the CAS. According to Vasiliev, the skater should have had a qualified defense, and if Tutberidze raises this issue, perhaps the lawyers did not really take their defense seriously in court.
Vassiliev also expressed his dissatisfaction with the severe punishment imposed on Valieva, saying that the discovered drug does not bring any benefit in this sport, and compared this case with cases of doping of Western athletes, where, according to him, the sanctions appear less strict.
