Athletistic/Others. State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova expressed her comments regarding the decision of the Latvian Seimas, which officially banned its national teams from participating in matches with Russian and Belarusian teams.

“This is, overall, a manifestation of nationalism, total discrimination on the basis of nationality and a violation of the principles of the International Olympic Committee. Can we say that Latvia hit its athletes with this? Without a doubt. The IOC must respond in some way to what happened. This is a blatant violation of the rights of athletes who cannot independently complain to their government. Third-party organizations that monitor this process should provide feedback or contact the European Court of Human Rights,” Zhurova noted in an interview with RT.

Responding to a question about whether Lithuania and Estonia could follow Latvia’s example, the MP said: “It is entirely possible. It should be noted that even Ukraine at one time refused such an initiative, although it tried to present it, but the IOC reprimanded it,” Zhurova added.
