During a doping control of a Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva banned for four years, a third substance was discovered which has an anabolic effect, reports Yle.
The Finnish publication does not name the substance, noting that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is still only studying the possibility of banning it.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. The athlete’s sample contained banned trimetazidine. Previously, the CAS reported that Valieva, when filling out doping control documents, indicated that she was taking three drugs, two of which – hypoxen and L-carnitine – are not on the banned list.
In its statement released Monday, the court noted that Valieva had not provided convincing evidence demonstrating that the violation was unintentional. The athlete’s disqualification period begins on December 25, 2021, when his sample was taken at the Russian Championship. All of Valieva’s results from that day have been canceled. This led to a review of the results of the 2022 Olympic team tournament, where the Russian team won. First place is now awarded to the American team, the Japanese are second and the Russians will receive bronze. Valieva also lost gold at the 2022 European Championship.
