Lawyer Kamila Valieva and the BGP Litigation company Maxim Kuzmin commented on his participation in the process of protecting the figure skater.

On Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) found Valieva guilty of violating anti-doping rules and suspended her for four years. The 17-year-old athlete’s suspension period begins on December 25, 2021 and his results have been canceled since that date.

In January 2023, the anti-doping disciplinary committee of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (DAK RUSADA) ruled that although Valieva committed an anti-doping rule violation, she bore “no fault or negligence”. The athlete avoided sanctions, except for the cancellation of his results on the date of sample collection – December 25, 2021. This decision was appealed to the CAS.

— We represented the interests of Kamila Valieva at the stage of the proceedings before the anti-doping disciplinary commission of the RAA RUSADA, and not during the consideration of the case before the CAS. Following the results of the proceedings in the anti-doping disciplinary committee of RAA RUSADA, it was decided that Kamila Valieva was not guilty of violating anti-doping rules and no sanctions were applied to her.

Also last year, we managed to achieve success in other sports cases, in particular, we represented the interests of the Russian Paralympic Committee before the appeal court of the International Paralympic Committee and achieved the cancellation of the decision of the General Assembly of “The International Paralympic Committee has decided to suspend the participation of the Russian Paralympic Committee in the committee of the International Paralympic Committee,” said Kuzmin, quoted by Soviet Sport.

The CAS decision in the Valieva case led to a review of the results of the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympics, where the Russian team won. First place is now awarded to the American team, the Japanese are second and the Russians will receive bronze. Valieva is also deprived of gold at the 2022 European Championship.
