Usik: May, May, I’m already on my way

Alexander’s fight with Tyson Fury was postponed due to the Briton’s injury

Ukrainian champion, holder of WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO belts Alexander Usik briefly commented on the postponement of the fight for title of absolute world champion heavyweight title with WBC belt holder Tyson Fury.

“May it be May, I’m already on my way,” Usik wrote on Instagram, attaching a new poster for the upcoming fight.

The unification fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion has received a new date – Fury and Usyk are scheduled to meet in the ring on May 18. The event, as before, will be hosted by the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh.

The fight for the absolute title was supposed to take place in Riyadh on February 17. Lennox Lewis was appointed special guest of the event, and the undercard included fights between former IBF world champion in the first heavyweight division Jay Opetai, 19-year-old Moses Itauma and IBF world super featherweight champion Joe Cordina.

However, two weeks before the fight with Usyk, Fury was injured during sparring. The Briton’s injury required stitches, due to which Tyson will not have time to recover for the fight with Usyk. According to British cutman Jorge Capetillo, the boxer will need at least three months to recover.

The Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, Turki Al al-Sheikh, announced that the February 17 boxing evening in Riyadh has been canceled and purchased tickets will be refunded.

Penalties for boxers who refuse to fight are $10 million. At the same time, the contract for the fight between the Ukrainian and the British has a rematch clause.
