Athletistic/Figure skating. Former Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko emphasized in an interview with Match TV that the 2014 Olympics in Sochi proved to be a watershed moment for Russian figure skating.

The competitions in Sochi took place from February 7 to 23, 2014 and included team figure skating competitions on the program for the first time. The victory in this tournament was won by the Russian team, which included Evgeni Plushenko, Yulia Lipnitskaya, Tatyana Volosozhar / Maxim Trankov, Ksenia Stolbova / Fedor Klimov, Ekaterina Bobrova / Dmitry Solovyov, Elena Ilinykh / Nikita Katsalapov.

“The performance of our skaters was very brilliant. However, what was remembered most – the gold medal in the team competition, Lipnitskaya’s red dress or the drama with Plushenko?” – Mutko noted.

He also stressed the importance of organizing and supporting figure skating in Russia. “We have taken significant steps to develop this sport: an ice complex was built especially for it in Novogorsk. We allocated separate zones, including short track speed skating. After the Olympics in Sochi, we “We realized the need for further development and created several centers under the leadership of famous coaches such as Eteri Tutberidze and Nina Moser,” he noted.

Mutko also noted that the team’s training strategy was thoughtful and successful, which led to outstanding results at the Olympic Games.
