Athletistic/ Figure skating. One of the leading figure skaters in Russia at the turn of 2021 and 2022 was Kamila Valieva. She won the Russian championship in Saint Petersburg in December 2021 and in January 2022 she became European champion in Tallinn. In February 2022, the Olympic Games took place in Beijing. They started with a team tournament, where Russia triumphantly took first place. Kamila Valieva brought her country 20 points out of 20. However, after that it was revealed that Kamila Valieva passed a positive doping test during the Russian Championship.

An investigation was carried out for a long time. The case was then brought before the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). He made his decision at the end of January this year. The court found the athlete guilty of violating anti-doping rules and disqualified her for four years. She will also lose all awards won since December 25, 2021. Today, February 7, the text of the court decision was published. We propose to study his main theses.

Valieva’s own version became known, but the court declared it untenable

The text of the court decision gives Kamila Valieva’s version. She believes the banned substance may have entered her system through a strawberry dessert made by her grandfather on the same board where he crushed the drug. The court found that no evidence had been presented to support this version.

Anti-doping test B also came back positive

In March 2022, Kamila Valieva’s doping control was opened. She also tested positive. Trimetazidine was found there. It was because of this substance that a four-year disqualification was imposed.

Valieva took around 60 medications and supplements

The court conducted a study on the substances used by Kamila Valieva. The study period runs from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2022. Kamila Valieva was revealed to be taking around 60 medications and supplements.

The CAS “tried” Valieva as an adult athlete

The Court of Arbitration for Sport imposed a fairly severe sanction on Kamila Valieva, namely a four-year disqualification. Many expected Valieva’s “protected person” status to be taken into account due to her age. However, this did not happen. The court explained why.

– The CAS panel considered that since the athlete could not prove that she had not committed this act intentionally and that the criterion of “negligence” was not met, according to the rules, there was no no reason to treat the athlete differently from an adult. athlete, – says the press release.

The court read the testimony of coach Eteri Tutberidze

As part of the investigation into the case of Kamila Valieva, the testimony of her coach Eteri Tutberidze was collected. As noted in the text of the decision, Tutberidze does not control or discuss with team doctors medications and supplements prescribed to athletes.

It is also noteworthy that Eteri Tutberidze was not against the invitation of doctor Philip Shvetsky, despite the fact that he had already been accused of violating anti-doping rules.

“He does not treat athletes and does not provide medical care, but organizes additional medical monitoring, consultations, and also accompanies the team as a sports doctor and can provide first aid,” specifies the text of the decision.
