The traditional athletics tournament “Russian Winter” is gradually losing its status and scope, this needs to be corrected, the first vice-president of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) told . Irina Privalova .
The Russian winter tournament took place in early February in Moscow.
— It is clear that not all species were represented. At 2:30 a.m., it’s just physically difficult to fit everyone in. There was no women’s pole vault, no long jump, no men’s triple… Unfortunately, the “Russian winter” is becoming a small competition, different from the one we were at accustomed in the past. Previously, we had more funds and could even afford two-day competitions. But we will work on it gradually so that the tournament returns to its previous status. If we talk about development, we don’t want to limit the tournament to certain types. We will work on this.
— In your opinion, what is the optimal number of competitions during the winter season? Now the guys say they have plans for 2-3 tournaments – maximum.
— Of course, 7-8 is better. But you know, you can find competitions. There is an opportunity to go to Belarus and I know people will go there. Student competitions will take place in March. Of course, it is difficult to compare the current situation with that of the 80s. Back then, only students participated in 7-8 competitions, not like adults. Alas, for now, we have what we have. The budget is quite limited. Therefore, we hope for the best,” Privalova told .
